The fight against the Fall Webworm has been intensified in Baku – spraying operations are underway on trees

29 June 2026 | 16:07

Efforts to combat the mass appearance of caterpillars on trees in certain areas of the capital are continuing.

The Baku City Greening Maintenance Department stated that, in connection with the issue, specialists inspected the areas where the caterpillars were spotted. As a result of the investigations, it was determined that the pests observed on the trees are the caterpillars of the Fall Webworm.

Consequently, a special action plan has been developed by the Department. Currently, daily monitoring is being conducted in these areas, and chemical spraying is being carried out with special substances where the caterpillars are detected.

The agency emphasized that these caterpillars do not pose a threat to human health. Nevertheless, monitoring and control measures are being continued to prevent the damage they cause to green spaces.

According to experts, although it is completely harmless to humans, the Fall Webworm can damage more than 120 plant species. In addition to mulberry trees, the pest feeds on cherry plum, apple, plum, apricot, pear, peach, blackthorn, rosehip, lilac, ash, poplar, currant, and other plants. Research conducted on the Absheron Peninsula has revealed that this insect feeds on 30 plant species in the region.
